OPS is a once-a-month feature here on the blog where I pass along the videos, pdfs, and other goodies I’ve run across that are too accessible, interesting, and powerful not to share. Consider it my curated list of nutrition and lifestyle tidbits most worth your time.
I ran across Virta Health on Mark Hymans’ The Doctor’s Farmacy Podcast. Dr. Hyman was interviewing Dr. Sarah Hallberg on her ground-breaking research on reversing Diabetes and the program she set up with Virta Health to help patients do just that.
While I highly recommend watching/listening to the whole interview and checking out Virta’s page, here’s what you need to know:
- Dr. Hallberg’s research (and that of others!) shows that diabetes, at its base, is an intolerance to carbohydrates. Nearly every frustrating and tragic complication of the disease is derived from the negative effects of too many carbs entering the body via one’s diet.
- Using the Keto diet, Virta Health helps adults with diabetes change their eating and lifestyle habits, bring their blood sugar under control, get off their medications, lose weight, and regain the energy, clarity, and quality of life eroded by their struggle with diabetes.
- Virta Health was designed and is staffed by dedicated, hands-on medical professionals. Enrollees gain immediate access to all-hours comprehensive social and medical support. Program doctors work with patients to consistently monitor their needs, adjust their medications, and customize diets and other factors as often as needed (sometimes daily!). Staff is available digitally at any time to help enrollees navigate situations and choices in the moment as they arise, ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.
I’ll be honest, here. I believe that every diabetic – every pre-diabetic, even – in American should have access to the kind of program Virta Health is running. Our national health care system should require insurers to pay for it, the same way they shell out bazillions of dollars every year to pharmaceutical companies for diabetes medications.
While I still hold out hope that we might someday force that down the insurance industry’s throats, Dr. Hallberg, Virta Health, and similar pioneering providers are making desperately needed services available to people who have no other way of getting them right now. Check them out, and then pass them along to anyone in your life who might benefit!
